John the Baptist (also called the Baptizer) was a 1st century Jewish preacher and ascetic regarded as a prophet by four religions: Christianity, Islam, Mandaeanism, and the Bahá'í Faith. The title of prophet is asserted in the Synoptic Gospels, the Qur'an, and the Bahá'í Writings.
According to St. Luke, he was a relative of Jesus. He is also commonly referred to as John the Forerunner or Precursor because Christians consider him as the forerunner of Christ.
The Eastern Orthodox believe that John was the last of the Old Testament prophets, thus serving as a bridge between that period of revelation and the New Covenant. They also teach that, following his death, John descended into Hades and there once more preached that Jesus the Messiah was coming, so he was the Forerunner of Christ in death as he had been in life. According to Sacred Tradition, John the Baptist appears at the time of death to those who have not heard the Gospel of Christ, and preaches the Good News to them, that all may have the opportunity to be saved. Orthodox churches will often have an icon of St. John the Baptist in a place of honor on the iconostasis, and he is frequently mentioned during the Divine Services. Every Tuesday throughout the year is dedicated to his memory. The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers Saint John the Forerunner on six separate feast days, listed here in order in which they occur during the church year (which begins on September 1): September 23 - Conception of St. John the Forerunner January 7 - The Synaxis of St. John the Forerunner. This is his main feast day, immediately after Theophany on January 6 (January 7 also commemorates the transfer of the relic of the right hand of John the Baptist from Antioch to Constantinople in 956) February 24 - First and Second Finding of the Head of St. John the Forerunner May 25 - Third Finding of the Head of St. John the Forerunner June 24 - Nativity of St. John the Forerunner August 29 - The Beheading of St. John the Forerunner In addition to the above, September 5 is the commemoration of Zechariah and Elisabeth, St. John's parents. The Russian Orthodox Church observes October 12 as the Transfer of the Right Hand of the Forerunner from Malta to Gatchina (1799).

O proroke Ioanne Krestitele Gospod' Iisus Hristos skazal: «Iz rozhdennyh zhenami ne vosstaval (prorok) bol'shij Ioanna Krestitelja». Ioann Krestitel' proslavljaetsja Cerkov'ju, kak «angel, i apostol, i muchenik, i prorok, i svechnik, i drug Hristov, i prorokov pechat', i hodataj vethoj i novoj blagodati, i v rozhdennyh prechestnejshij, i svetlyj Slova glas».
Prorok Ioann Krestitel' — posle Devy Marii samyj chtimyj svjatoj. V chest' ego ustanovleny sledujuwie prazdniki: 6 oktjabrja — zachatie, 7 ijulja — rozhdestvo, 11 sentjabrja — useknovenie glavy, 20 janvarja — Sobor Ioanna Krestitelja v svjazi s prazdnikom Krewenija, 9 marta — pervoe i vtoroe obretenie ego glavy, 7 ijunja — tret'e obretenie ego glavy, 25 oktjabrja — prazdnik perenesenija ego pravoj ruki s Mal'ty v Gatchinu (po novomu stilju).
Prorok Ioann Krestitel' byl synom svjawennika Zaharii (iz roda Aarona) i pravednoj Elizavety (iz roda carja Davida). ZHili ego roditeli okolo Hevrona (v Nagornoj strane), na jug ot Ierusalima. On prihodilsja po materinskoj linii rodstvennikom Gospoda Iisusa Hrista i rodilsja na shest' mesjacev ran'she Gospoda. Kak povestvuet Evangelist Luka, arhangel Gavriil, javivshis' ego otcu Zaharii v hrame, vozvestil o rozhdenii u nego syna.
Salomija, doch' nechestivoj Irodiady, svoej neskromnoj pljaskoj vo vremja pira do togo ugodila Irodu i vozlezhawim s nim gostjam, chto car' s kljatvoj obewal ej dat' vse, chego ni poprosit ona, dazhe do poloviny svoego carstva. Tancovwica, nauchennaja mater'ju, prosila dat' ej togda zhe na bljude golovu Ioanna Krestitelja. Irod uvazhal Ioanna kak proroka, pojetomu on opechalilsja ot takoj pros'by. Odnako postesnjalsja narushit' dannuju im kljatvu i poslal strazha v temnicu, kotoryj otsek Ioannu golovu i otdal ee device, a ta otnesla golovu svoej materi. Irodiada, nadrugavshis' nad otsechennoj svjatoj glavoj proroka, brosila ee v grjaznoe mesto. Ucheniki Ioanna Krestitelja pogrebli ego telo v Samarjanskom gorode Sevastii. Za svoe zlodejanie Irod poluchil vozmezdie v 38 godu posle R. X.; ego vojska byli razbity Arefoj, vystupivshim protiv nego za beschest'e docheri, kotoruju on pokinul radi Irodiady, a v sledujuwem godu rimskij imperator Kaligula soslal Iroda v zatochenie.
