Marshal of the Soviet Union GOVOROV Leonid Alexandrovich (1897-1955) During the Great Patriotic War (1941 -1945), Chief of the Artillery Academy of the Red Army, Artillery Chief of the Western Sector, the Reserve Front, Deputy Commander of the troops of the Mozhaisk line of defences, Artillery Chief of the Western Front, Commander of the 5th Army of the Western Front, commanded a group of troops, and then Commander of the troops of the Leningrad Front. His talent as a military leader was best revealed when he conducted the defence of Moscow, in defending Leningrad and lifting the Leningrad blockade, in the liberation of Estonia, coordination of the troops of the Leningrad and the 2nd and 3rd Baltic Fronts, and in other major military operations. Hero of the Soviet Union, was awarded the highest military order of Victory and many other orders and medals.
