7. Installation of POLYGLOSSUM for DOS
Installation of PG_II for DOS is similar to that of Windows.
CODEPAGE 866 - for working with texts and lexical data bases in Russian (standard for Russia). To install the code pages mentioned and correspondingly customize the keyboard, you can use screen fonts (files ***.CPI) and customized keyboard driver TopKey included in the POLYGLOSSUM package.
Installation of the dictionary on the hard disk.
To install the dictionary on the hard disk insert the CD-ROM into drive, make this drive current and start program SETUP.EXE in the DOS session.
if you use CD drive D, type commands:
(if you run this program under Windows environment it will install Windows-version of POLYGLOSSUM).
Installation program will ask you about directory to put the dictionaries in, about language of help, and about your monitor (color or black ans white).
Choose options and press F2 to continue.
Then installation program copy all needed files, make some customization and make the batch file (PG2.BAT) to load resident part of the dictionary into memory.
After that installation program starts utility SET_DIC.EXE which help you customize the list of dictionaries in use.
There are two text files which described dictionary files available for POLYGLOSSUM: CD_DICTS.PG2 (dictionaries on CD-ROM) and HD_DICTS.PG2 (hard disk resident dictionaries).
If CD-ROM is in drive, both CD-resident dictionaries and HD resident dictionaries will be available, otherwise you will use only HD resident dictionaries. POLYGLOSSUM at start time checks HD_DICTS.PG2 and adds all available dictionaries into the menu, then it checks CD_DICTS.PG2 and adds into the menu CD resident dictionaries which are not on the hard disk.
Using dictionaries from HD is faster, but more disk space is needed.
Setup will copy SET_DIC.EXE into POLYGLOSSUM's directory, so you can also use SET_DIC.EXE later to copy dictionaries onto hard disk (or remove from hard disk).
Program FLOPPY.EXE can be used to install additional (new) dictionaries which are distributed on floppy disks.
You can also manually edit files CD_DICTS.PG2 and HD_DICTS.PG2 exactly the same way as for Windows version described above.
Calling a dictionary to search for a given word.
To make it possible calling POLYGLOSSUM-II from another DOS program, residential part of the dictionary must be loaded in the memory.
Some DOS customizing must be made before. In order to work with German-Russian texts you must install appropriate screen fonts and keyboard driver.
!!! IMPORTANT for German-Russian dictionaries users !!!
POLYGLOSSUM for DOS is also designed for "codepage 920" which allows to work with standard Russian, standard English and extended to work with alphabets of Germany, Finland, etc.
We recommend to use TopKey package supplied with POLYGLOSSUM. The TopKey has its own installation program and user's guide.
If you have already used the POLYGLOSSUM-II installation program, it has already created a batch file PG2.BAT for loading the resident part of the dictionary. Run it and POLYGLOSSUM will ready for use.

b) press the keys for calling the dictionary ( <Alt 1>, if not redefined or see Appendix 1).
While the dictionary is invoked, help is always available by pressing <F1>.
