PolyglossumII User's Guide

1. Introduction

PopUp dictionary POLYGLOSSUM-II was made for working together with other Windows applications. Program PG_II for Windows is compatible in terms of lexical data bases with the PG_II for DOS program (see also User's Guide POLYGLOSSUM - II for DOS).

There are data bases used in the program, which are similar to dictionaries published by traditional polygraphic method. The alphabetical indices are compiled in both languages of the dictionary. With a word (or phrase) from the alphabetical index, the program finds the lines of the dictionary, containing this word (or phrase).

In addition, it is possible to view in full the entry of the dictionary, containing any of the found lines of the dictionary.

Copying text from the dictionary to other applications through the clipboard is also provided for. Initial word or phrase for searching in the lexical data base could be typed by the user (after invocation of the program) or copied from the Clipboard. This method of input of words permits to easily automatize calling the dictionary to search for the word or phrase selected in the application. Press Polyglossum's HotKey and the marked word will be placed into clipboard, Polyglossum will be activated and try to search the contents of clipboard in the dictionary.

If you have several lexical data bases for PG_II, you can dynamically switch between them. It is also possible to start several copies of the PG_II program, customized for different lexical data bases and different combinations of keys for their invocation.

2. Installation of the dictionary on your hard drive.

To install POLYGLOSSUM - II onto hard drive insert distribution CD-disk into drive and run windows program SETUP.EXE on it. If Windows is running you can run INSTALL.EXE by the means of FILE MANAGER or by means of FILE/RUN command of PROGRAM MANAGER

Attention! If you run INSTALL.EXE in DOS environment it will install

DOS-version of POLYGLOSSUM. If you planned to use the both POLYGLOSSUM for DOS and POLYGLOSSUM for Windows install them in the same directory. In this case the both versions of the program will use the same data files (dictionaries) without any manual customization.

Installation program asks you about destination directory. Write it in input window of the dialog and click by mouse "Install" button. Then installation program creates a group "PG-II" and all needed items in it. After that the installation program executes SET_DIC.EXE program which helps you to customize the list of dictionaries in use.

There are two text files which describe dictionary files available for POLYGLOSSUM: CD_DICTS.PG2 (dictionaries on CD-ROM) and HD_DICTS.PG2 (dictionaries which had been installed on hard disk).

If CD-ROM is in drive, both CD-resident dictionaries and installed on HD will be available, otherwise you will see only HD-installed dictionaries. POLYGLOSSUM at the start time checks HD_DICTS.PG2 and adds all available dictionaries into the menu, then it checks CD_DICTS.PG2 and adds into the menu dictionaries available on CD which were not installed on the hard disk.

Using dictionaries from HD is faster, but more disk space is needed.

Setup will copy SET_DIC.EXE into POLYGLOSSUM's directory (the icon name is "Set DICT") , so you can also use SET_DIC.EXE later to copy dictionaries onto hard disk (or remove from hard disk).

Program FLOPPY.EXE (the icon name is "Add DICT from floppy") can be used to install additional (new) lexical databases which are distributed on floppy disks. (After subscription on Polyglossum/PARS you are eligible to receive them.)

You can also manually edit files CD_DICTS.PG2 and HD_DICTS.PG2. There may be two reasons for that:

you can edit dictionary names which form POLYGLOSSUM's menu;

if you have another CD-ROM disk with POLYGLOSSUM's dictionaries to add descriptions of these dictionaries to CD_DICTS.PG2 (using existing lines as example). So POLYGLOSSUM (and SET_DIC.EXE) will "see" different set of dictionaries depending on which CD-ROM disk is in the drive.

Warning!!!

Installation will be done correctly if you use PROGRAM MANAGER or compatible (with the same DDE commands set) windows shell. If not, creation of the group may fail. In this case see manual of your Windows shell program.

POLYGLOSSUM is designed for "codepage 920" which allow to work with standard Russian, standard English and extended to work with the alphabets of Germany, Finland, ...

We recommend using TopKey package supplied with POLYGLOSSUM. In course of the TopKey installation, Russified bit-mapped and TrueType fonts for Windows will be installed.

Use the fonts from TopKey package to work with German-Russian documents. The TopKey has its own installation program and user's guide.

3. Calling the dictionary to search for a given word.

It is possible to call POLYGLOSSUM-II from another application. To do so you should start POLYGLOSSUM first. To call PG-II from other application select any word and press Polyglossum's HotKey (<ALT + 1> if not redefined by user). You can also use this method to navigate in the dictionary.

For example: if you want to look at other meanings of a word wich you see in the text of dictionary entry, press right mouse button, mark this word and press Polyglossum's HotKey. This is possible to change Polyglossum's HotKey.

To do it use item Options -> HotKey ... in the menu of Polyglossum.

Scrolling of the alphabetical list is being made using keys <Up>, <Down>, <PgUp>, <PgDn>, or using the scrolling bar (controlled by the mouse). Selected element of the alphabetical list is automatically displayed is the upper edit-window. Revision of this window content results in the corresponding scrolling of the alphabetical list.

Exit from the dictionary (switching back to the application which it was called from) is done via minimization of its main window (the window with the alphabetical list). It can be done using the system menu or by pressing the <Esc> key. If you have several lexical data bases (dictionaries) for PG_II, you can dynamically switch between them. T"Dictionary" in the menu, and o switch to another lexical data base, choose choose appropriate dictionary.

For working with several dictionaries at the same time, it is also possible to start several copies of the PG_II program, customized for different lexical data bases and different combinations of keys for invocation thereof (see above). With a selected word from the alphabetical list, the PG_II program finds all lines of the dictionary, containing this word.

To view the translation of the word or phrase selected from the list, either press <Enter>, or double click with the mouse on the word from the alphabetical list.

The lines found are displayed in a special window.

If there are many lines found, the window is provided with a vertical scroll bar (controlled by the mouse).

Scrolling can also be made using keys: <Up>, <Down>, <PgUp>, <PgDn>, <Home>, <End>.

The window could be closed either using its system menu, or by pressing the <Esc> key.

In addition to displaying lines of the dictionary, names of the entries containing these lines are also being displayed. On selecting a line or the name of an entry, it is possible to turn to viewing the corresponding entry of the dictionary. For that, either press <Enter>, or double click the mouse on the line or the name of the chosen entry. If an entry name is selected it is displayed from the beginning, and if a line is selected from the dictionary, the position in which the selected line is located will be found automatically in the window for viewing entry of the dictionary.

If the entry of the dictionary is long, the window for viewing the entry is provided with a vertical scroll bar (controlled by the mouse). Scrolling may be also made using keys <Up>, <Down>, <PgUp>, <PgDn>, <Home>, <End>.

5. Copying text of the dictionary

Transfer of text from the dictionary to other applications is made through the clipboard.

Fragments of the text with the found lines of the dictionary or entries of the dictionary could be copied to the clipboard.

To switch to the mode of copying text, the window for viewing lines of the dictionary or the window for viewing entries of the dictionary should be invoked, and <F5> or the right button on the mouse should be pressed.

A window with the text will appear which can be revised or copied to the clipboard, as in a normal edit-window. The window for copying text can be closed by pressing the <Esc> key or the right key of the mouse.

6. Customization of POLYGLOSSUM

Some of Polyglossum options can be changed using the menu of program PGW. EXE.

In order to change the position of the Polyglossum windows simply drag them to the desirable position.

The OPTIONS of Polyglossum menu:

ALWAYS ON TOP - Polyglossum window (or icon) will always overlap other windows.

AutoShow Lines found - if this menu item is checked, Polyglossum will automatically open window with the lines found (if the search in alphabetical list is successful).

HotKey - you can change the keys of the fast invocation of dictionary. The HotKey dialog window allows you to choose combination of <Ctrl>, <Alt>, <Shift>, <character or figure> or to cancel HotKey.

RESTORE DEFAULT - restore all OPTIONS and the positions

SAVE OPTIONS and POSITIONS - saves positions of Polyglossum's windows, all options listed above and the name of the dictionary which was used last.

There is a utility PG_FNT. EXE (icon name is "PG Font") in the Polyglossum package which allows you to change fonts used by Polyglossum.

If you use German-Russian-German, Finnish-Russian-Finnish, Swedish-Russian-Swedish dictionaries, choose fonts included in Polyglossum package. The coding of symbols in them corresponds code page "920", wich contains symbols of Russian and Latin alphabets and symbols of the alphabets for the countries of Northen Europe. We also plan to develop a variant of the program with export-import of multifont texts and corresponding customization utility.

It is possible to disable the use of fonts defined by PG_FNT.RXE. To do so, start Polyglossum (program PGW. EXE) with switch/F.

7. Installation of POLYGLOSSUM for DOS

Installation of PG_II for DOS is similar to that of Windows.

CODEPAGE 866 - for working with texts and lexical data bases in Russian (standard for Russia). To install the code pages mentioned and correspondingly customize the keyboard, you can use screen fonts (files ***.CPI) and customized keyboard driver TopKey included in the POLYGLOSSUM package.

Installation of the dictionary on the hard disk.

To install the dictionary on the hard disk insert the CD-ROM into drive, make this drive current and start program SETUP.EXE in the DOS session.

For example:

if you use CD drive D, type commands:

>D:

(if you run this program under Windows environment it will install Windows-version of POLYGLOSSUM).

Installation program will ask you about directory to put the dictionaries in, about language of help, and about your monitor (color or black ans white).

Choose options and press F2 to continue.

Then installation program copy all needed files, make some customization and make the batch file (PG2.BAT) to load resident part of the dictionary into memory.

After that installation program starts utility SET_DIC.EXE which help you customize the list of dictionaries in use.

There are two text files which described dictionary files available for POLYGLOSSUM: CD_DICTS.PG2 (dictionaries on CD-ROM) and HD_DICTS.PG2 (hard disk resident dictionaries).

If CD-ROM is in drive, both CD-resident dictionaries and HD resident dictionaries will be available, otherwise you will use only HD resident dictionaries. POLYGLOSSUM at start time checks HD_DICTS.PG2 and adds all available dictionaries into the menu, then it checks CD_DICTS.PG2 and adds into the menu CD resident dictionaries which are not on the hard disk.

Using dictionaries from HD is faster, but more disk space is needed.

Setup will copy SET_DIC.EXE into POLYGLOSSUM's directory, so you can also use SET_DIC.EXE later to copy dictionaries onto hard disk (or remove from hard disk).

Program FLOPPY.EXE can be used to install additional (new) dictionaries which are distributed on floppy disks.

You can also manually edit files CD_DICTS.PG2 and HD_DICTS.PG2 exactly the same way as for Windows version described above.

Calling a dictionary to search for a given word.

To make it possible calling POLYGLOSSUM-II from another DOS program, residential part of the dictionary must be loaded in the memory.

Some DOS customizing must be made before. In order to work with German-Russian texts you must install appropriate screen fonts and keyboard driver.

!!! IMPORTANT for German-Russian dictionaries users !!!

POLYGLOSSUM for DOS is also designed for "codepage 920" which allows to work with standard Russian, standard English and extended to work with alphabets of Germany, Finland, etc.

We recommend to use TopKey package supplied with POLYGLOSSUM. The TopKey has its own installation program and user's guide.

If you have already used the POLYGLOSSUM-II installation program, it has already created a batch file PG2.BAT for loading the resident part of the dictionary. Run it and POLYGLOSSUM will ready for use.

To call a dictionary from another program and to transfer a word for searching in it, the following operations should be performed:

a) move the cursor to the word which you want to find in the dictionary;

b) press the keys for calling the dictionary ( <Alt 1>, if not redefined or see Appendix 1).

While the dictionary is invoked, help is always available by pressing <F1>.

In order to unload POLYGLOSSUM (and free memory) run PG2.BAT with the parameter "U":

>PG2 U

To switch between the alphabetical lists, press the <F3> key. Scrolling of the alphabetical list is being made using keys <Up>, <Down>, <PgUp>, <PgDn>.

A selected element of the alphabetical list is automatically displayed in the upper edit window. Revision of the content of this window results in the corresponding scrolling of the alphabetical list.

With a selected word from the alphabetical list, all lines of the dictionary containing this word can be found.

To exit from the dictionary (returning back to the program which it was called from) use keys <Esc> or <F10>.

If you have several dictionaries for PG2, you can dynamically switch between them (key <F6>).

With a selected word from the alphabetical list, the PG2 program will find all lines of the dictionary, containing this word. To do that, press <Enter>. After that, the found lines are displayed in the window.

Scrolling may be done using keys <Up>, <Down>, <PgUp>, <PgDn>, <Home>, <End>.

In addition to displaying lines of the dictionary, names of the entries containing these lines are also being displayed. On selecting a line, it is possible to turn to viewing the corresponding entry of the dictionary. To do that press <Enter>. The position in which the selected line is located will be automatically found in the window for viewing the entry of the dictionary.

If the entry of the dictionary is long, scrolling may be made using keys <Up>, <Down>, <PgUp>, <PgDn>, <Home>, <End>. To exit from the mode of viewing the entry of the dictionary strike <Esc>.

Copying text of the dictionary

Transfer of text from a dictionary to other applications is made through the text buffer of the dictionary.

Fragments of the found text lines in the dictionary or entries of the dictionary could be copied to the buffer.

To switch to the mode of copying text from the mode of viewing the lines found in the dictionary or the mode of viewing an entry of the dictionary, press the <F5> key.

To mark the text strike <Shift + cursor control keys>, to memorize the marked text strike <Enter>, to exit from the copying mode strike <Esc>.

Appendix 1.

Customizing program.

1) Customizing dictionaries in use.

There are two text files which describe dictionary files available for POLYGLOSSUM: CD_DICTS.PG2 (dictionaries on CD-ROM) and HD_DICTS.PG2 (hard disk resident dictionaries).

CD_DICTS.PG2 - dictionaries on CD-ROM - contains 2 lines for each dictionary

1st line - pathname of dictionary file;

2nd line - name of the dictionary (as it appears in the menu). 1st symbol must be colon.

example:

F:\\PG_II\\math.pgb

:Mathematical dictionary

F:\\PG_II\\busin.pgb

:Business dictionary

HD_DICTS.PG2 - dictionaries on hard disk

it has the same structure as CD_DICTS.PG2

If CD-ROM is in drive, both CD-resident dictionaries and HD residents will be available, otherwise you will use only HD resident dictionaries. POLYGLOSSUM at start time checks HD_DICTS.PG2 and adds all available dictionaries into the menu, then it checks CD_DICTS.PG2 and adds into the menu CD-resident dictionaries which are not on the hard disk.

2) Loading into memory and unloading POLYGLOSSUM

a) Make an additional RC.COM program (interface of the lexical program with DOS) residential. To do it, just start it. On the repeated run of the RC.COM, it unloads from the memory, and also unloads the residential part of the dictionary from the memory.

b) To start the PGD.EXE program:

>PGD

In order to start POLYGLOSSUM in black and white mode add in the command

line parameter /BW

>PGD /BW

By default, POLYGLOSSUM-II sets hot keys <Alt 1> for calling a dictionary, and <Alt 2> for inserting the text memorized in the dictionary buffer to another program.

You can redefine the hot keys for calling Polyglossum and insertion of the memorized text to that being revised.

In order to redefine "call key" add in the command line parameter /Cnn:mm where nn is scan code of the key and mm is Shift status (!! both nn and mm must be DECIMAL !!)

In order to redefine "paste key" add in the command line a parameter /Pnn:mm where nn is scan code of the key and mm is Shift status (!! both nn and mm must be DECIMAL !!)

example: starting POLYGLOSSUM with "call key" = <Ctrl Alt F1>

and "paste key" = <F12>, color mode

>rc

>pgd /C59:12 /P88:0

Appendix 2.

For Word Perfect users.

The dictionary could be called from any word processor using the screen fonts and keyboard driver given by the DOS environment.

Some programs, however, may use their own screen fonts and interpret key strokes in a non-standard way during text typing While working with such programs, the POLYGLOSSUM program may not function correctly.

In particular, for correct POLYGLOSSUM work with the Word Perfect word processor, in addition to the above said, the following customizing must be made:

1) Copy files WPxxxx.WCP supplied with POLYGLOSSUM-II to the Word Perfect directory (you will find them on the distribution disk in the directory "\\FOR_WP")

2) Run Word Perfect with a parameter /CP=866 or /CP=900 or

/CP=920 depending on the used code page.

3) Customize Word Perfect for the DOS font (256 characters).

(keys Shift F1, 2, 1, 6)

4) Switch off internal Word Perfect keyboard driver

(keys Shift F1, 5, choose enhanced keyboard or any other

given by DOS).

5) Load the file which is being revised to Word Perfect. It could be either Word Perfect, or ASCII file corresponding to the code page (866, 900 or 920) chosen, in particular, it could be any text file in Russian.

On revising a file in Word Perfect using Polyglossum, the file

could be processed in Word Perfect customized to another mode

(also on another computer) with the correct result. If this file is exported to DOS from Word Perfect, with the customizing mentioned above it will be compatible with any program using the code page which you were working with.
